A brawl that erupted moments after the verdict in a murder trial this afternoon injured five people, including three sheriff's deputies.
Six people were arrested after the incident, which occurred about 4 p.m. in a courtroom at the county's criminal justice complex at 26th and California, says Penny Mateck, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.
The fight broke out moments after Judge Nicholas Ford announced a not-guilty verdict in a murder trial. The victim's
family attempted to charge to the front of the courtroom, towards
the defendant, Mateck says.
"Our deputies stepped in and were injured in the process," Mateck says."The judge did attempt to help our deputies when the incident was occurring."
Two individuals involved in the skirmish were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, Mateck says. The three deputies have been taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital.
No charges have yet been filed.
Mateck did not have any specifics on the murder case.
