An autopsy yesterday revealed police fatally shot a Hermosa man in the back, in apparent contradiction to official accounts of the incident.
A police news release says the incident unfolded Tuesday evening when officers attempted to interview Luis Colon in the 2700 block of N. Kilbourn Ave.
Colon walked away, then drew a pistol and turned on the officers, according to the police statement. The office released no further information about Colon's death.
The incident, which is the second police shooting this week, is being investigated by the city's Independent Police Review
Authority. The agency's spokesman did not return several calls seeking comment yesterday.
Hatch says the Colon incident underscores the importance of
improving the IPRA's resources. He says he did not feel a sense of
urgency from the department.
"We want to have confidence
in the process," Hatch said. "I don't know if we can as it now
stands."
