Bears Keeping Busy

By Mike Maguire | Mar 26, 9:14 AM

The Bears continued their aggressive off-season ways by beefing up on both sides of the ball over the weekend.  Jerry Angelo was able to re-sign seasoned veteran guard Ruben Brown for a one year deal worth $2.2 million dollars.  The Bears also added the services of free agent defensive tackle Anthony Adams from San Francisco before the active weekend was complete.

With Brown’s return, the Bears are paving the way for Cedric Benson to run behind a familiar line in a familiar system.  As wild as this off-season has been, I’m sure the continuity is a welcome change of pace at Halas Hall.  Ruben Brown may have to blow out a lot of candles on his birthday cake (35 of ‘em, to be exact), but the 8-time Pro-Bowler is still one of the best at his craft and certainly the Bears best option for 2007.  The Bears O-Line is not only more experience with Brown anchoring the left guard spot; they are more talented as well.

The Anthony Adams addition is a solid insurance policy against the saga of Tank Johnson and the possible departure of Ian Scott.  The 6-ft. 299 lb. Adams was considered undersized for the 3-4 scheme in San Francisco, but is expected to have better results in Lovie Smith speed-based system.

Still not satisfied, the Bears also signed ex-Steelers safety Tyrone Carter this weekend to a 3-year deal estimated to be worth around $2.4 million dollars.  If the addition of Adam Archuleta didn’t force Mike Brown to check the want-ads, Carter’s new deal just might.

One thing is for sure… the Chicago Bears are not sitting on their hands and hoping for the best in 2007.  This team knows their window of opportunity is short, and they are doing everything they can to climb on through.

The power of the almighty dollar certainly has something to do with it.

If they know their "window of opportunity is short," why did they trade their established running back to start a young, less experienced guy who will still endure growing pains and ups and downs?
